French papers include general officer's paper: holograph copy of French's report to Brevet Major General Thomas S. Jesup, the Quartermaster General, October 7, 1850, of his operations in the Eighth Department (Texas), February-September, 1849, primarily while accompanying Brevet Major Jefferson Van Horne's detachment of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment from San Antonio to El Paso, June 1-September 8. This report recounts the hardships of the march, points out the difficulty of subsisting a large force at El Paso, and occasionally contrasts the supply problems encountered with those faced during the Mexican War.
